Assistant Curator

Summary of Responsibilities:

The St. Louis Cardinals are seeking candidates for their Assistant Curator position. The Assistant Curator is responsible for the system of records and accountability for each individual object in the collection using standard museum best practices. This person will assist the Curator with research and exhibits and will provide support with the preparation and installation of exhibits. This position also performs specialized care and maintenance to artifacts and exhibits, and works closely with the Curator to develop recommendations to problem-solve issues. The Assistant Curator will support social media efforts and assist with museum programming.

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Document all donations, loans, and purchases of collection items, administer all associated records, and produce reports to ensure the proper recording of third-party artifacts and adherence to owner restrictions and terms of loans.
  • Assist the Curator with exhibit development, artifact preparation, exhibit installation and de-installation, and all other related duties as assigned
  • Maintain and care for objects through specialized museum practices, and ensure that best practices of collection preservation, as directed by the Curator, are followed at all times
  • Evaluate the conditions of off-site exhibits and confer with the Curator to develop recommendations as needed
  • Support the Cardinals Communications Department and the Cardinals Nation Marketing Coordinator with special social media content (ex. Museum Week, Women in Baseball Week, etc.), execute museum programming (ex. Artifact Spotlights), and coordinate the production of television segments as required for organizational use
  • Organize any artifact use by internal departments, and ensure curatorial presence with the artifact at all times
  • Assist the department will any other administrative duties as assigned

 

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, or a closely related field
  • At least 2 years of registration experience in a museum                                         
  • Experience researching topics for exhibits
  • Experience preparing artifacts for display and installation/de-installation
  • Experience with museum collections management software                             
  • Ethical standards as related to caring for collections
  • Organizational and Interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to focus on details, meet deadlines, and lift/move artifacts

 

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in History, Museum Studies or a closely related field
  • 3+ years of registration or collection management experience in a museum
  • Mount-making experience through education, workshops or on-the-job training                               
  • Experience researching topics for exhibits
  • Knowledge of design principles for case layouts for exhibits
  • Analytical skills in regard to information and research
  • Experience with Past Perfect preferred
  • Good Presentation skills
  • Experience with photography management software
