Summary of Responsibilities

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently seeking candidates for their Director of Special Events position. This position is primarily responsible for the sales, marketing and operations of the Special Events Department which includes the development of brand strategy and the implementation of the multi-channel marketing campaigns to grow both the Special Events Department and Cardinals Nation. The Special Events Director will also be responsible for directing and implementing major sales initiatives, as well as the coordination and execution of Busch Stadium and Cardinals Nation special events. Along with developing and directing public events, the Special Events Director will also lead the Manager of Special Event Operations, as well as the Sr. Account Executive and Special Events Coordinators who directly report to this position.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Lead the business development efforts of the Special Events department through developing new business strategies and marketing plans that include radio and TV spots, print advertisements, stadium signage, and promotions/communications via email, website and social media
  • Develop and implement strategies for outbound sales efforts. Direct daily department operations to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed, and the sales/coordination of events in Busch Stadium and Cardinals Nation meet both brand and organizational standards of quality and customer service
  • Oversee and complete all website updates and redesigns as mandated by BAM for Cardinals Special Events and Cardinals Nation
  • Analyze and evaluate the performance of marketing efforts and strategies for Busch Stadium Special Events as well as Cardinals Nation to determine performance of current efforts and strategy for future efforts
  • Develop an overall department budget for revenues and expenses and regularly review to ensure financial goals and objectives are met
  • Responsible for all concert and non-baseball public event websites, announcements, press releases, email blasts and all public-facing communication and marketing campaigns including campaigns deployed on behalf of tour or promoter
  • Responsible for all aspects of on-site activation for external event sponsors as well as local radio stations and media
  • Work with the Director of Cardinals Nation Operations to develop and implement marketing and advertising strategy for Cardinals Nation, including brand development and consistency, as well as design, content, programming and SEO of CN website and all other media outlets as applicable
  • Generate leads for large-scale public events and develop new event programs and opportunities for revenue generation that will continue to promote the unique and versatile nature of Busch Stadium, while working closely with the St. Louis Cardinals legal team
  • Develop and maintain relationships with city and civic leaders, corporate contacts, external meeting and event planners, and other local venues
  • Act as the main point of contact with all other MLB Special Events teams, and stay informed on how other teams promote special events and what public events they host
  • Serve as the St. Louis Cardinals' Post Season Hospitality Coordinator by overseeing the planning and execution of all hospitality events to ensure the organization remains consistent with their level of excellence in all areas

Education and Experience Required:

  • BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in sales, marketing, communications and/or hospitality industry, or equivalent education, training and experience
  • 5-7+ years sales experience within the hospitality industry or related field
  • Experience in development of marketing and sales campaigns, as well as event planning operations, and production
  • Experience in business development activities and social media marketing
  • Experience in staff management
  • Creative direction, copywriting, and editing experience
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to work flexible, variable hours s needed
  • Experiencing in using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to multi-task, work, and make decisions independently
  • Ability to speak in public and conduct regular live and pre-recorded media interviews

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • 8-10+ yrs. experience in sales within the hospitality industry or related field
  • Experience in the development of marketing/sales strategies and campaigns with proven marked success
  • Experience in large scale event operations and event planning and production, as well as business development activities, cold calling, and contract negotiation
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with social media marketing
  • Experience in management, development and leadership of staff, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while continuously evaluating and/or shifting priorities
  • Extensive creative direction, copywriting and editing experience
  • Experience in utilizing CRM (Reserve a plus)
