Grounds Crew Internship

Summary of Responsibilities:

The St. Louis Cardinals are seeking candidates for the Grounds Crew Internship position. This internship offers the opportunity to learn from and assist the St. Louis Cardinals Grounds Crew in all aspects of upkeep, care, maintenance and improvement of the Busch Stadium playing field. The Grounds Crew Intern will work in conjunction with the Head Groundskeeper and staff to maintain the Busch Stadium playing field to MLB standards. This intern will learn all aspects of maintaining the sand-based bluegrass turf, all clay and warning track areas of the field, and best practices for moisture, fertility and pest management. This intern will also assist in field protection and recovery from special events such as concerts and corporate events.

Essential Functions of the Job:

• Accomplish mowing and other cultural practices such as aeration and topdressing to produce a high quality natural grass playing surface
• Carefully operate equipment such as tractors, utility vehicles, sprayer, sand pro, edger, and blower
• Under supervision, apply fertilizers and pest management products to the playing field
• Setup field for batting practice, games and other special events as necessary
• Clean and maintain field wall pads, bullpens, grounds crew maintenance area, break room, locker room and bathrooms
• Ensure field preparation as needed for non-game events
• Other duties as assigned by the Manager

Education and Experience Required:

• Currently enrolled in a four-year degree program in Turf Grass Management, Crop and Soil Sciences, or related field at an accredited university; at least college junior status
• Ability to earn college credit upon completion of internship
• Some knowledge of playing fields and irrigation systems associated with sports complexes
• Ability to work non-standard work hours with a variable schedule, to include night, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to work in a professional, team atmosphere
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and/or frequently deal with a rapidly changing work schedule and environment throughout shift
• Move and learn quickly under unpredictable situations
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, lift 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, twist, walk and run on uneven ground, stand for extended periods of time, and give appropriate directions
• Ability to operate grounds equipment in a safe and effective manner

Education and Experience Preferred:

• Currently enrolled in a four-year degree program in Turf Grass Management, Crop and Soil Sciences, or related field at an accredited university; at college senior status
• College training and/or prior internship experience in Turf Management
• Experience operating tractors, reel mowers, rotary mowers, edgers, and utility vehicles.
• Previous experience with techniques used in cool season turf grass management.
• Experience handling field tarps.
• Familiar with techniques used in infield skin, home plate and pitching mound and warning track maintenance.
