Mental Skills Coordinator

The St. Louis Cardinals seek a Mental Skills Coordinator with excellent leadership and counseling skills. The Coordinator will develop and implement an organizational curriculum to improve mental strength, psychological wellness and on-field performance for players at all levels of the organization. The Mental Skills Coordinator must be a confident communicator with the proven ability to enhance an athlete's performance through attention control training and mental awareness techniques. The Coordinator must also have experience training and developing coaching, medical, and performance staff members on their role in supporting the Mental Skills program. The Coordinator will also help evaluate existing mental skills programs and mentor existing mental skills staff. Top candidates will have an exceptional listening, planning, presenting, and communication skills.


Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Develop an organizational curriculum that provides athletes with psychological counseling related to their performance and provides staff the training they need to support the program
  • Develop mental strategies that enable athletes to overcome setbacks and improve resiliency
  • Identify mental strengths and weaknesses that contribute to an athlete's performance
  • Facilitate counseling and/or workshops that focus on goal setting, visualization, concentration and relaxation
  • Counsel athletes that have endured sports injuries
  • Help athletes to manage on and off-field pressure and anxiety
  • Apply modern and improvised concepts to enhance physical potential

Education and Experience Required:  

  • Masters of Science degree in Sports Psychology/Kinesiology or related field
  • Experience as a Sports Psychologist or Mental Skills Coach in a high level sports setting
  • Thorough understanding of sports culture and the ability to display sound judgement
  • Ability to communicate and interact closely with athletes, coaches, medical and performance staff members and administrative personnel
  • Experience tailoring strategies that assist athletes in overcoming difficulties, improving performance, and preparing for competition
  • Proven ability to work with a multidisciplinary team including other psychologists, nutritionists, GPs, coaches, physical therapists, athletic trainers, etc.
  • Experience delivering counseling and workshops for players and staff
  • Success implementing strategies for athletes to cope with and overcome injuries
  • Innovative thinker with strong planning and problem-solving skills
  • Passionate about enhancing the self-efficacy of athletes
  • Bilingual is a major plus
