Summary of Responsibilities

The St. Louis Cardinals are seeking candidates for our Multimedia Digital Archivist position in the Communications department. This position is responsible for organizing, digitizing and preserving within the team's archives the St. Louis Cardinal's photographs, videos, audio files, graphics, documents and other historically significant assets so they are readily retrievable. The Multimedia Digital Archivist is primarily responsible for meta-data tagging and uploading images, videos and other digital assets into H5, the team's central shared digital asset management system, as well as coordinating the retention and digital preservation of a variety of important club assets in other format specific electronic storage depositories (ex. network Photoshare, AVID Interplay etc.) . This position also advises on archival policies and practices for managing born-digital materials by establishing naming protocols, metadata schema, controlled vocabularies and handling quality control of the preservation workflow. This person will serve as the primary point person within the Communications Department to initiate and perpetuate on-going Cardinals heritage-based storytelling to support the team's daily video, digital and social media production.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Working through the St. Louis Cardinals' historical images and other important digital assets to identify important assets for historic preservation, assigning meta-data (key-words) to the files and uploading them to the team's central digital archive H5
  • Ensure accessibility of digital assets and other collections by determining appropriate intellectual organization and digital storage structure, analyzing content of the source material, and conducting historical research for the purposes of preparing material descriptions
  • Evaluate assets within the team's possession for preservation and retention within the archive to make sure all moments in team history are represented
  • Maintaining a thorough, functional record-keeping system, including developing procedures for digital file retention including developing controlled vocabularies, naming conventions, and a master index of metadata key words, as well as cataloguing collections, handling the quality control over various preservation oriented work flows (ex. tagging in AVID) and performing other digital archive conservation and records management tasks
  • Advises on the creation of policies and procedures for managing born-digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organization, description and access
  • Working with the Cardinals IT Department, Communications Department staff and others to organize the central photo share directory that is the repository of all images within the clubs possession
  • Ridding out poor or redundant images within the team's possession by going through all files within the photo share, as well as collecting those within the possession of each department to sort, weed & archive
  • Assisting digital archive users on how to best access, use and interpret archives
  • Help coordinate the scanning, digitization and archiving of important club assets such as documents, audio files, video files, photos, and graphics
  • Primary point person within the Communications Department to initiate and perpetuate on-going Cardinals heritage-based storytelling to support the team's daily video, digital and social media production (ex. Cardinals Insider, Throwback Thursdays, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Communications Department to develop fan-focused engagement initiatives that elicit important history from generations of Cardinals fans (ex. fan oral histories)
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Required

  • Masters in Library Science, Digital Archiving, history, computer science or related field
  • 3+ years of practical experience with digital archiving including digitization, creating metadata descriptions and processing digital assets

 Education and Experience Preferred 

  • 5+ years of experience with digital archiving including digitization, creating metadata schema, controlled vocabularies and processing assets
  • Experience producing public facing heritage based content for web, social media, television, etc.
  • Deep knowledge about the history of the St. Louis Cardinals or Major League Baseball
  • Demonstrated career experience organizing sports teams files and archives
